What is a Clinical Neuropsychologist?
A Clinical Neuropsychologist is a psychologist who has undergone advanced training in the understanding of the brain-behaviour relationship and the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the brain. Clinical neuropsychologists can assess learning and thinking skills in children and adults across the lifespan with developmental, neurological, medical and psychiatric conditions.
Importance of Neuropsychological Assessments?
A neuropsychological assessment can help to understand a person’s learning and thinking skills. It can be used to assess and treat people with conditions that affect memory, learning, attention, concentration, language, reading, problem-solving and decision-making. It involves measuring and evaluating performance on tasks that assess these skills. The results from a neuropsychological assessment can be used to understand cognitive strengths and weaknesses and inform strategies to overcome any difficulties identified.
Reasons for an Assessment
There are many reasons why a neuropsychological assessment may be requested, including:
- Attention and concentration difficulties
- Concerns about academic performance
- Behavioural concerns impacting learning
- Difficulties at school or in the workplace
- IQ assessment
- Investigate ADHD diagnosis
- Concerns about changes in memory or other cognitive skills
- Difficulties following a previous brain injury
- Capacity and decision-making assessments
